Program Overview

The Southeast Community Energy Futures Academy (SCEFA) is a regional leadership and education initiative that brings together community leaders and technologists from across the Southeast to learn about emerging energy transition technologies (EETTs) in relation to community visions and concerns.

The program is part of the Southeast Direct Air Capture project funded by the U.S. department of energy and led by the Southern States Energy board. It is co-sponsored by the Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems, Direct Air Capture Center, Renewable Bioproducts Institute, and Strategic Energy Institute at Georgia Tech.

Program Goals

  • Goal 1: Develop a training curriculum
  • Goal 2: Increase local capacity to engage equitably
  • Goal 3: Develop a community of practice (CoP)

What are EETTs

EETTs, standing for Emerging Energy Transition Technologies, is an umbrella term created by SCEFA that describes technologies or processes that aim to slow down climate change by enabling low carbon energy sources and/or managing carbon after energy is produced.

In the SCEFA program, we focus on the following EETTs, though there are more that are still being researched and developed:
